Fall TV

I have not written in a while so i thought i would start with an old favorite. Fall TV. There are obviously returning and new but this year there are far fewer returning shows that i am interested in.

Returning shows

Smallville

This is the 10th and final season of this show. I think there are very few people who thought this show would last this long. I started watching it live in the third season. The show was a very typical high school drama when it was launched but at this point they have managed to work a large portion of the DC universe into the show. Characters that i thought it would be impossible to do live action have appeared on the show. I am really hoping the show goes out on a high note as it really is one of the best sci-fi dramas ever made at this point. Once you past 200 episodes a show can't be disrespected.

Criminal Minds

There are a lot of one hour procedurals on TV these days but in my opinion CM is the best. For those who don't know the show is about an FBI team that mainly profiles serial killers. Some of the stores are disturbing to say the least. Others are out right disgusting but it really is a well written and well acted show.

There are obviously other shows i watch but with the departure of LOST, 24 and Law and Order there are very few things that I still consider must see TV.

New Shows

Blue Bloods
This is a show about a family of cops. It is from the makers of the Sopranos so it has instant credibility. However, it is scheduled for Friday nights which is where TV shows usually go to die so we'll see.

Hawaii 5-0
I am not old enough to remember the original but i am looking forward to the remake. It looks like simple escapist fun.

The Event
This is the latest show to be buzzed about as the next LOST. The last was flash forward which only lasted one season. I am going to watch it because the marketing as been good but my expectations are mixed.

And that is about it. Not much going on in TV this fall but we'll see if it works out.

Mel Gibson

I was never really a big Gibson fan. I think I have seen one or two of his movies but he never really ranked high. For anyone who hasn't heard i have a link to two of his outbursts below.

Rumors about this guy have been around for years. But this is undeniable proof here. The question to me is where does he go from here. He is not in a position to deny it is him on the recordings. And when you tell your child's mother that she deserves to be raped by a pack of niggers it is hard to deny that you are racist and sexist.

What is interesting to me is the spin machine that is going to follow this case. At some point in the near future he will have to go to rehab. Since racism and sexism is not a disease that i know of it will be interesting to see how he justifies it. My assumption is that he will just call it anger management. I'm curious as to if he will be able to come back from this. He was on the tail end of his career anyway but i just don't see any possible way in which the viewing public will forgive him for this. And since the wife apparently has dozens of tapes we may have just scratched the surface of crazy Mel.

SEX, SEX, SEX

I haven't written in a while so I thought I would start off with an interesting title. However, the topic of the post is not actually about my sex life. All I will say about that is that its good.

The real topic is some updates in my life. One of my goals for last year was the completion of the Canadian Securities Course (CSC). I am glad to say that i finished it a little under 2 months ago. I found the second test to be harder than the first but i only got 2% less so maybe it wasn't. Either way I am just glad to be done and to have gotten my reimbursement because it felt like it would never come.

On another bright note I just got the first promotion of my career. The salary increase is not really a huge amount but it is a step in the right direction. Also i have a new title. My new title is Manager Marketing Analytics. The scope of my work will not change drastically but it will be nice to be able to show progress on my resume for when I am looking for my next job. Which will most likely be withing the next 8 months or so.

Anyways, I think this is a good kick off. I am going to try to get back to blogging every week.

Wish me luck.

Next week ... Home improvement.

Death in the Family

So i have been away for a while. It couldn't be helped. I was preparing to take an exam. The Canadian Securities Course (CSC) part 2. I took the first part back in December and passed. I took the second test on Friday and i am hopeful that i repeated my previous performance.

Anyways as the title of the post suggests there has been a death in my family. My Grandfather passed away on Friday morning. He was 94 years old. It was a very quick and shocking decline. As recently as about 3 months ago he was relatively strong and in good spirits. But i guess at that age this is how it goes. His last words were to tell his wife of 68 that he loved her.

Rest in peace Grandpa.

The Dirty Thrities

Well I have crossed over. My youth is complete. In other words I am now the big 3-0. To be honest I have not been taking it well. I have little to no know desire to be in my 30s. By any reasonable standard I am doing quite well in life. I have a beautiful wife, a nice home and a steady job but that still doesn't mean I have to enjoy getting older. I was in my old neighborhood recently and drove passed my old high school and it occurred to me that it had been over 11 years since i was a student there and that no current student would have any idea who the hell I was. I was a big deal there but now it been over a decade.

We kept it fairly low key for the big day. Since it was good Friday i didn't have to work. We had great weather so Nadeene and I went for a long walk and we went to dinner in a local restaurant later in the evening. We are also going to a Raptors game later this week which should be good.

I am still the youngest member of my immediate team at work and they all advised me on how getting older is not a big deal. I think they are either lying to themselves or just trying to cheer me up. In life you should probably fight the fights you can win and the race against time is not a race you can win but i am going to give it a shot. I intend to eat healthy and exercise and try to keep my body as young looking as i can for as long as I can.

Twilight

So in the interests of staying up to date on all things pop culture I recently borrowed the first Twilight movie from the library. I have never really been big on vampires. Especially since they have been turned into these ridiculous sex symbols. Someday someone will have to explain to me what is so sexy about being killed by having all the blood in your body drained through your neck. I like my vampires to be real villains, in others words I think the movie Blade got it right.

None the less, i decided to give twilight a chance. To be blunt, i think it's pretty silly stuff and i don't see what the big deal is. I am not going to say it's the worst movie i have ever seen (That title still belongs to "The never ending story"). But i don't see why it has caught on in the way that it did. The teen angst is at a boiling point for the whole movie. I have been out of my teens for a while now and in a few weeks my 20's will be coming to an end so maybe I am just to old to "get it". I just don't see why the main characters fell in love so quickly. It's like they met and 2 seconds later the were saying they could not live with out one an another. And the guy who is supposed to be a heart throb? Like what the fuck? There is no way to say this without sounding sexist be he is a pussy period.

Overall, i will still watch the equals when I can get them from the library but that's as far as it goes. Reading the books is out of the question. I am hoping that they get better but i have little hope.

Shaving

So I have had a beard on some level since my early twenties. Whether it be a full beard or just your standard issue goatee. However, a disturbing thing has happened over the last few years. I have noticed more and more grey hairs making their way into my beard. It is a strange thing as I have relatively few grey hairs on my head. I was complaining to my wife about this and she suggested that i just shave it off. When she first suggested it I was totally against it. I have had facial hair for over a decade now and the thought of being completely clean didn't sit well.

In my mid-late teens I used to shave my head about once per week. When I got a job at the Bay working part time i figured that customers would not want to buy shoes from a high school kid. So i grew out my hair a little bit and started maintaining a beard with the goal being to look a little older. Now that I AM older, the concept of looking older is pretty low on my list of priorities.

Anyways the point of all this is that I decided to shave my beard. Outside of 2 days worth of stubble i am now clean shaven. To be honest their are time when I almost don't recognize myself in the mirror. But I will get used to it eventually. My mother inlaw thinks it made me look 10 years younger. It will be interesting to see if anyone at work notices the change.

Linked In

So i joined the networking site linkedIn about 2 years ago. For those who don't know this site is basically the business equivalent to facebook. The main purposes of the site is to create connections with people you have worked with. The goal I think is that when a recruiter does a search a list of names will show up. If the name of someone you worked with shows up in the search then the recruiter might also see your name in your friends network. It's a pretty good system I think. In that past few months I have actually been contacted by several recruiters about various positions. I am not ready to leave my current job just yet but it is good to know I have options. This time next year i will most likely be ready to look around and this is certainly something I intend to keep track of.

Dexter

Have you ever watched the show Dexter? I recently borrowed the first two seasons from the library. For those who don't know it is a show about a serial killer who kills other serial killers. It is an interesting if somewhat disturbing concept. The show puts you in the position of actually rooting for a serial killer. The first two seasons were a fairly suspenseful affair. I actually watched all 12 episodes of season 2 in the span of 2 days. I have season 3 on hold now and I am looking forward to it.

LOST

So two weeks ago was the season premiere of LOST. We are going into the last season now and they have to start answering some questions. I wanted to let two weeks go by before i wrote this post. The reason for that is that I hoped that by now i would have a better understanding of what the hell is going on. Unfortunately i do not. It seems like they have split realities or an alternate universe type thing going on. I love science fiction in general but this is not really something i wanted from this show. They have 16 episodes left. That is only 16 hours of television left to wrap up what is one of the most complicated show in tv history. I hope they can do it. However, fpr the first time i am starting to have my doubts.

Bills

It seems like there are always new expenses that come with home ownership. I know that this is the second post where i have complained about this but I can't help it. Two weeks ago we noticed that the drain in the sink of our master bathroom was draining very slowly. So we did the normal drano thing and it didn't help, also the faucet was leaking. So we called in a plumber. And 15 minutes and close to $300 dollars later we have a working bathroom. The guy was in our house for at most a total of 30 minutes.

Yesterday i was shaving with my electric shaver and all of a sudden it stopped working. Since i bought the shaver less than a month ago it seemed unlikely to die that fast. I soon realized the problem was actually with the electrical socket. I went and flipped the breakers but nothing happened. So now I am going to have to bring and electrician in here to fix that also.

What i want is to go 2 straight months where i don't have to fix anything in this place.

Avatar

So unless you have been living in a cave in the Arctic for the past few weeks you have probably heard of a little film called Avatar. It is by Canadian director James Cameron. As of this writing it has made over 553 million in the domestic box office alone. That is good enough for second all time. First all time is Titanic which was also directed by Cameron. Since he now has the two highest grossing movies of all time he should pretty much be able to ask the studios for whatever the hell he wants to from now on. Some estimates have this movie costing in access of 250 million to make.

The Story
The story basically is Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, and Last Samurai rolled into one with a sci-fi/environmental twist. In other words nothing all that original.

The visuals

This is what sets this movie apart. There were no really big name actors (Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz) in this movie so, most of the budget shows up on screen. Three years ago I said that transforms was the most amazing special effects movie I have ever scene. Will there is a new king and its name is Avatar. When you are watching this movie it is important to remember how little of it is actually real. Simply put it is amazing what they have achieved.

Do i recommend it?

Ultimately I don't know if i would recommend this movie for everyone. It is a little long and the story is not that original in my book. However, if you are a person who likes pop culture then you simply have to see this as it is the movie event of the last decade.

Vacation in St Lucia

So over the new years I went to St Lucia. This was my second trip there as my wife's family lives there. In addition this was actually my first time spending new years eve outside of Canada. It was a little weird to not be cold in January, The concept of being on the beach in what should be the middle of winter took me a while to mentally digest.

We did some tourist type things. We went on an aerial tour of the rain forest. It was really nice. There is almost no wild life in the rain Forrest outside of some birds. However, the plant life was extraordinary. Some of the trees were so huge they look like they came straight out of Jurassic Park or Avatar.

Her family also took us on a driving tour of the island. St Lucia is a very beautiful place. It only has one major issue. The problem is the hills. The island is simply too mountainous. Anywhere you go requires driving on some poorly maintained very winding roads. Honestly there are times when we were going around corners and I truly felt afraid. I could never drive there. But other than that it was a good trip.

New Years

Well it's 2010 and it's been about a month and a half since my last post. This year has been a real mixed bag for me but overall fairly successful. I will start with the obvious, I bought my first home in 2009. It pretty much dominated my year to the point where I didn't feel like i had the energy to do some other things i wanted to do. Buying a home is a hell of a lot of work. We first started looking in early march and since then my home has dominated my thoughts almost all of the time. Whether it was searching for a home or renovating the home once we actually took possession it seemed like there was/is always something to do. I would like to think that at this point.

One of my goals last year was educational. I wanted to complete the CSC and the PMI. I completed neither. I have at least started work on the CSC. I passed the volume 1 exam about 3 weeks ago. My hope is to take the volume 2 exam in march. I have changed my mind some what on the PMI certification. As of now I am leaning towards pursuing an MBA. This is a huge undertaking if I decide to go that route. As of now my main choice for the MBA would be Ryerson. The main reason for that is location and cost. I know that U of T or York are the more respected institutions but neither would really work that well for me. York is about an hour away from my home so doing it there on a part time basis would be very difficult. U of T has a downtown location but the total cost would be in the 70k range. Converserly I can walk to Ryerson from my office and the total tutition is about 15k. That is a huge difference. I could afford to do it without taking out a loan and still finish in 2-3 years. I am also going to look into having my company pay for it. Although i know i guy who is doing that and I think that they will only pay for an MBA from Dalhousie University and on a part time basis it might take 5+ years which is more than i would be interested in.

Another goal for last year was to keep blogging. I only did 29 posts in 2009 which is a huge drop for me. This year i have to get that number back up in the 40s at least. I think with the home renovations cooling off i will have time to do this.

That's it for this week.

Next week... vacation in St Lucia.
